Christmas Shopping

Even though we were in high school, we never had any money. Mother gave us just what we needed for school supplies. Since we worked for our room and board, we didn't really need any more. I sometimes spent 1 cent for candy for myself when I went to Bliese's store on Scott Street. That was always a big decision to make so I'd be sure to get just the right thing for my penny. It was a real treat for me.

At Christmastime, we wanted to do some Christmas shopping, but since we didn't have much money, Norma and I pooled our money and for the big amount of $l.00, we were able to buy gifts for the entire family.

We shopped at the dime store, - Woolworth's at that time. I remember walking up and down the aisle fingering many items as we tried to decide what to get so we would stick to our budget. We bought some fragile glass ornaments among other things, but I especially remember a pin tray that we got for our mother. It was only a small glass dish measuring about 4 inches across. It had slots all the way around it through which we pulled a blue ribbon to make it look pretty. It was made in Germany, and we were pretty proud of it. This little pin tray has an honored place in my china cabinet today. I can always remember the fun we had the year we bought it.

How happy we felt as we wrapped our gifts that year, knowing that we had something for everybody. This was probably one of the happiest Christmases as it was the first time we had done our own Christmas shopping.
