Watch For the Kitty
I was about 7 years old. We were having our picture taken at a studio. This was an event, as it was a first for us. After being arranged for the picture by the photographer according to our age, we were told to look at the camera and "watch for the kitty". I had had my picture taken many times before with an ordinary camera, each time being told to "watch for the kitty". Each time I had missed it. This time when the photographer repeated the same phrase, "watch for the kitty", I decided that I had missed it often enough, most likely due to my inattentiveness, but this time I wasn't going to let that happen. So all the while I stared with big eges right at the camera, only to hear the photographer say, "We're all finished". It was then and there that I discovered that there really was no kitty at all, because I couldn't possibly have missed it this time. This phrase had always been used just to get our attention. No wonder I have eyes as big as wagon wheels on this picture!
