Garage Sales
Written Mar. 1996
Clutter, clutter, clutter! How fast it piles up and how hard it is to throw away. A garage sale every summer is not the answer. It may help somewhat, but one has a whole year after that to collect some more clutter. I usually haven't accumulated too much since the last sale, but there stands my empty garage, and as long as I am putting an ad in the paper, others might as well take advantage of it and bring their "junk" over.
So we end up having a garage sale, but not much of the "junk" is mine. As a result, I have three days of confusion at my house with people coming and going. However, I enjoy it, and could just be helping some of the participants get rid of their accumulation!
In the meantime, I will continue to have garage sales every summer, and will continue to scour my house to find things to get rid of, in hopes that over a period of time I will find less and less. If I but look in the corners, I will find plenty there that needs to be tossed. It is a good way to get my garage cleaned out once a year, and it gives my life variety!
In the course of the years that I have had sales, I have gotten to know my neighbors better and have met many interesting people. It is a good character study of the people who come. It is also the one time of the year that I cook up a huge kettle of chili, so I don't have to spend time cooking during that time!!
